Events
The beach wardens get involved with local and global events
to promote the coastal environment. This page will give you an idea of
the sorts of things we do. Please come along and meet us.
Our major events this year are World Oceans Day in June
and Marine Week in August, keep an eye out for all the goings on.
MARINE WEEK
See our calendar for events. Marine Week is Co-ordinated
by the South East Marine Programme and is a celebration of our Marine
Heritage. There are lots of events taking place throughout the South East;
find out more about other events by looking up www.southeastmarine.org.uk
or telephone 01489 774400.
This year we are conducting a walk along West Beach in Littlehampton for World Oceans Day and a Coastline scavenger Hunt for Marine Week. Dates will be set nearer the time – check our event calendar.
Past Events
June 2006 - This year's World Oceans Day
A good turn out despite the England match. We had a fish
mash and ray decorating table, a stall with strandline items and an information
point. Visitors could test their knowledge of the coastline with our quiz
and anyone wanting to guess how many slipper limpets were in the jar was
in with a chance of winning an inflatable dolphin. Also present were the
Sea Watch Foundation with a lifesize inflatable dolphin and the West Sussex
Countryside Rangers. For those people brave enough to risk getting a nip
there were two touch pools with crabs and shrimps.
April 2006 - The Mayor joins in with Worthing Beach Clean
The Mayor of Worthing Nick John joined a group of Beach
Wardens and volunteers to don gloves, yellow jacket and litter pickers
for a beach clean organised by Anna Carter a West Sussex Beach Warden.
The weather was perfect and even though the beach was in
very good condition, four bags of rubbish were collected including a damaged
buoy and the metal frame of a parasol. As the council conducts regular
cleans along this section of beach there was very little large rubbish
but lots of bottle tops and small bits of fishing line were found. This
shows that even when the beach seems clean that the role of a Beach Warden
can be valuable.
Lots of photos were taken and although the mayor seemed
happier in front of the camera than getting too dirty he did say that
the quality of the environment is a serious issue and is keen to learn
more about what the Beach Wardens do.
Thanks to all the volunteers who came along - even those
who came under duress!
